It's 9.45pm on Friday night and yet again I find myself sitting on the familiar ferry between Scotland and Ireland, heading to what is now very much my second home..
Last weekend I had the chance to have a run on the infamous Irish Tarmac down at the Killarney rally. It was a jump in the deep end but one I had to take to get the miles and confidence up. It was a really worthwhile experience, despite feeling like going from hero to zero in a week – coming from winning stages at the Pirelli to being miles off the pace the next weekend! The important thing was to get experience and the changeable conditions and bumpy stages were ideal. Also to have a run at Molls Gap was pretty special. It was amazing to think that I was on the other side of the world driving on roads which I had watched in awe a few years ago – it put things into perspective a bit.
I have a lot of homework to do now and am planning some more testing. The real focus for this year is experience and learning against tougher competition and I am confident I am improving all the time.
Life has been really busy. It feels like I have been living out of a suitcase forever, even though I share a house in Cockermouth. When I get home I do my washing and then hang it all around my room to dry just so that I can pack it back again into my suitcase. Work is also really busy with a lot happening. So all in all, between working , organizing rallies, travelling to Ireland most weekends, buying some groceries, and getting my washing done there’s not much time to be homesick . I’m also training to enter a triathlon in September. Myself and a few mates from work are all doing a training program at our local gym. I’ve never done a triathlon before, but I thought it would be something fun to do and also helps with my fitness training.
I also feel I should mention my mother, because she is currently acting as my PA ! Each morning on my way to work we have our daily phone call and she sorts out the bookings for the next ferry or flight and the accommodation for the next rally, and helps sort my life when my laptop dies and my inbox goes ‘over quota’ and all my emails are bouncing back.... I definitely couldn’t do it all without her help. Now all she needs to do is get her international licence sorted and come to England!! (I am hoping that writing this on a public forum will help my cause!!)
Cheers,
Molly
