I don’t know if I have ever been so exhausted and excited at the same time! Everything has been so busy but the experiences and opportunities I have had have been pretty unforgettable.
On Saturday I had my first test in the new car and I have to say I am still buzzing. The car was very impressive. The sequential gearbox and that extra bit of power compared to what I am used to make a huge difference. I spent the day with Nial McShea who helped me get the best out of the car and set it up. His experience and feel for the car were incredibly valuable. The car has four way adjustable suspension and we were able to make lots of changes and end up with a setup which gave me a good amount of confidence in the car. There is still a big learning curve ahead but I feel we have made a good start. The car had basically been re-built from the ground up and had no faults all day, which is a testament to John McKillop and the boys.
To get to Ireland I drove my car onto the ferry from England. I was actually lucky to make it. My road car has engine issues, and I'd been given a second-hand engine to replace it, so I had the other engine in the boot with a plan to fit it to the car over the weekend while in Ireland. I drove the whole 2½ hour trip to the ferry with the engine light on, not sure if I'd get there.
As it turned out, the engine I took over wasn't suitable, but we managed to find another one. What a day! With a lot of help from John, Greg and Marty we managed to get the engine in and I ended up running late and had to plead my way onto the last ferry of the evening.
With only three weeks now until the first round, this week’s plan is to get stuck into organising all the logistics and team arrangements. This year I have the support of Graphix Signs and they have designed some fantastic livery for the car. I’m really looking forward to finalising this..
